English for Spanish Speakers

What

Avancemos is a multi-level program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

It is designed specifically to support the needs of adults who speak Spanish as a first language.

Avancemos classes are part of Glendale Community College’s Noncredit ESL Program.

We offer interactive and dynamic ESL classes.

Literacy Level

Spanish is used in a very low stress and comfortable environment. In a climate of mutual support, respect, and celebration of diversity, students learn how to be students, build their self-esteem and confidence. Students enhance their vocabulary, life-skills, and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Level 1

Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are practiced.
Spanish is also used but not as much. At this level the students have begun to speak more freely and are ready for more intensive study. Students write simple sentences, express themselves in simple English tenses, read and write short paragraphs, explore important civic lessons, and cultural competence.

Level 2

Less Spanish is used as students are introduced to the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills appropriate to the level. Intermediate paragraph writing is introduced and higher level skills are begun. Students develop critical thinking skills, talk about plans, future events, give advice, and learn how to stay active within their communities through meaningful civic lessons.

Level 3 - Vocational ESL (VESL)

This is the intermediate level in which the students are ready to discuss topics related to the workplace. This class focuses on the development of language skills for a work environment and for vocational contexts. Students work closely with academic counselors, learn about non-profit organizations that advocate for justice for workers. Students plan to register for ESL 4 and are encouraged to start working on a vocational certificate.
